Nancy, Leah's mom, helped out again this year with the computer scoring of the
event.
The Skipper got to play, too - he drove one of the two RHIB's (Rigid Hull
Inflatable Boats) that acted as safety vessels for the Regatta. He
showed you can do amazing things in a small, lightweight boat that has a 75
horsepower engine on the stern. Sailboat or power boat, Skip always
says, "It's GREAT to be at sea again!" *
Some Massachusetts Sea Scouts were lucky enough to be able to sail to
Regatta in this absolutely gorgeous sloop loaned to them by a friend of
their ship.

race. *
Tim and Isaiah work on their maneuvers, too.

The Coast Guard Academy Association's Stonington Lodge was our
"home" for the two nights we were at the Regatta. It's
a lovely place, and we are deeply appreciative of being allowed to use it.
The ultimate-ultimate Frisbee game occupied the troops until well after
sundown. *

The second day was a bit breezier than the first day, as these two Sea
Scouts found out.
It sounds simple, "Just stand on the centerboard and the boat will pop
right back up!" Sure, if you weight more than 98 pounds.
"Okay, I'm pulling for all I'm worth - now what?"
The guys decide to lend a hand.
This should be easy.
Garth and the Coast Guard come to the rescue.
"Okay, let's try this one more time."
Meanwhile, one of the 361 boats goes over, and Tim and Tim2 work to right
her.
Tim tries to help Tim2 upon onto the hull to get a little more leverage.
Up she comes - the boys make it look easy.
The trophies await the presentation ceremony.
Northeast Region Sea Scout Commodore Bruce Johnson tells us about the
upcoming National Sea Scout Sailing Championships in Chicago.
The two girls who capsized (it was only their second day of sailing)
received the "spirit" award from Garth Wells.
Adam and Leah await the announcement of the top eight team finishes.
The top eight teams (see names and ships below) advance to the National Sea
Scout Sailing Championships in August in Chicago. Ship 25 is intensely
proud of Adam and Leah from our ship placing 7th overall. Not bad for
a couple of corn-belt farmers.
The top five teams (see names and ships below) also got to take home some
nice trophies.
After the Regatta concluded, we all piled into the Ark and headed over to
Groton, CT to tour the Submarine Force Atlantic Museum and go onboard the
USS NAUTILUS, SSN 571, the world's first nuclear-powered submarine.
The Storekeeper and the Boatswain decide the submarine force is the way to
go. Gangway! Regular Navy!

I am pleased to report the results of the Northeast
Region Sea Scout Sailing Championships, held this past weekend at the U.S.

REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS:
The Northeast Region Sea Scout Sailing Championships were sailed June 29 &
30, 2002 with a practice session on June 28, 2002. The scouts sailed in FJs provided by the US Coast Guard Academy. The event was held at the
USCGA Sailing Center "Jacob's Rock" along the Thames River. Seventeen boats were competing for the NE Region's 8 berths in the William I. Koch
Sea Scout Cup to be held August 4-10, 2002 at Columbia Yacht Club in Chicago.
The winds were light and steady through the morning of the 29th. After a lunch break the winds increased slightly, however; became very shifty
and oscillated through 30 degrees nearly every race. Sunday brought cooler temperatures and steady moderate winds of 8-11kts out of the SE. The
scouts sailed on Modified Triangles and Triangle-leeward courses. Ten (10) races were completed Saturday and 8 on Sunday. Only 3 protests were filed.
